The Cure4CF Foundation is delighted to announce that it has received funding in the amount of $10,000 from Australian Executor Trustees Discretionary Charitable Trusts for the financial year ended 30 June 2011.
Mr Cesare Silvestri, Manager Charitable Services, said in relation to the funding:

Gene therapy for cystic fibrosis lungs: are we there yet?

Dr Limberis is currently Research Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics.

This August gather friends, family or work colleagues together and join the Cure4CF Foundation as we Cook for the Cystic Fibrosis Cure!

We invite you to become a ‘Cook for a Cure Host’. Becoming a Host is a fun and tasty way to support the Foundation and the work of the leading Adelaide-based gene therapy research team. As a Host, all you need to do is hold an event (and this can be as simple as a cupcake party or as elaborate as a renaissance themed dinner party…) and ask your guests to consider making a donation to Cure4CF in lieu of what they would normally have spent on a night out (or on the host's gift).

More information, including a Host Pack (which features recipes from Cook for a Cure Ambassadors such as Maggie Beer and Janelle Bloom) is available on the Cure4CF website. The Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run (Sunday September 18 in Adelaide) is a great event, and whether you are entering as an individual, with friends or as a team you can make it even better by raising funds to support the efforts to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

AHA|SA supports Cure4CF

The Cure4CF Foundation was recently successful in winning a grant from the Australian Hotels Association (SA) for $18,800. These funds will be utilised to purchase a much needed centrifuge which will be used by the scientific research team in the new Allan Scott CF Research Laboratory which will open early in 2012.

ASMF supports Cure4CF

Cure4CF wins Variety Grant!

The Cure4CF Foundation is the recipient of a funding grant of $82,720 from Variety – the children’s charity.

The funds will be utilised for the purchase of an Ultracentrifuge, an important piece of scientific equipment that will assist the research team to accelerate the pace of their pre-clinical research.

Generous funding support from Australian Executor Trustees

Cure4CF Foundation has recently received generous financial support from Australian Executor Trustees Charitable Trusts (AET) for the purchase of much needed new equipment for the new respiratory centre at the Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide.

Wine Centre "Uncorked"

The Cure4CF Foundation is the selected charity partner for the National Wine Centre "Uncorked" event on 22 October. The Wine Centre select a different charity to support for each fortnightly event. We are very fortunate to have Wynn's Coonawarra Estate as the feature wines for the night.

50c from each glass and $3 from each bottle sold will be donated to Cure4CF Foundation. These funds will go directly to helping fast track the world leading gene therapy cure being led by the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital.

Adelaide Hill Tarmac Rally

Cure4CF Foundation are the selected charity for the Adelaide Hill Tarmac Rally (AHTR). The 2010 Application Service Provider (asp) / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally was a round of both the 2010 Modern and Classic Tarmac Rally Championships, joining Rally Tasmania, Targa West and Classic Adelaide as the other three rounds of both championships. The Cure4CF fundraising team provided a gourmet BBQ dinner for the officials and competitors on Saturday night 23 May. Over $3,000 was raised on the night.

Respiratory Centre Update

The new respiratory centre at the Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital is on track. Building work commences in the next few weeks and should be completed late next year.

The new centre will offer the following direct benefits to the CF community:
+ Easy access, in a brand new facility
+ Combines acute CF assessment area
+ Increased consulting, medicine/nursing areas
+ Clinical trials capability
+ New consultant: Dr Andrew Tye (0.8 FTE) Starts mid Feb 2010
+ Co-location with a new CF & Gene Therapy Research Lab
+ The Lung Function Laboratory incorporates new assessment tools for:
+ Earlier detection of lung disease
+ Assessing lung function
+ Testing very young children, and for older children
+ Multiple breath washout
+ Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT)
+ World standard attention to prevention of cross-infections during lung health testing
+ State-of-the-art layout design to minimise cross infection risks for CF and other patients
+ Negative-pressure airflow rooms for lung function testing of high-risk children with airway infections

This is a significant and exciting development for sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis as it will secure the expansion of current gene therapy research efforts to develop a cure. Cure4CF Foundation has played an instrumental role in the realisation of this project.

A purpose built gene therapy laboratory was first conceived by Cure4CF in 2006 and through ongoing lobbying of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital the project is now well underway. Now with further support from the WCH Foundation and Mr. Allan Scott AO OAM, Cure4CF Foundation has been successful in expanding the project to include pulmonary medicine clinics.

DEVELOPING A SINGLE DOSE TREATMENT FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Researchers from the Women’s and Children’s Hospital are one step closer to finding a treatment for cystic fibrosis that could last for most of a person’s lifetime.

The researchers have developed and tested a special method for preparing airways in mice to accept a gene that could effectively counteract the severe lung disease.

This novel therapy uses a modified virus particle to carry in the ‘wanted’ gene and is designed to reach airway stem cells to produce a very long lasting gene transfer.

Chief Medical Scientist in the Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Department, Dr David Parsons, his colleague Dr Don Anson, and PhD student Alice Stocker have for the first time discovered that a single application of this unique gene treatment can last for most of the mouse’s lifetime, and in a few cases for their entire life.

Dr Parsons says this break-through is a promising step towards finding an effective treatment.

“Imagine if you had a drug that you could take once, say for your severe asthma that would fix your asthma for most of your life – that is what we are aiming for here, we’re using gene therapy as a CF lung disease treatment,” Dr Parsons said.

“There is no cure yet for cystic fibrosis (CF). It's a life-long disease and that means any treatments for this genetic disease will need to work for a lifetime.

“For most diseases like CF, this means treatment has to be given on a regular basis.

“We think we are now getting the ‘wanted’ gene into the stem cells in the lung, which effectively makes the gene therapy last forever because all the ‘daughter’ cells produced from those stem cells also carry the gene. We are excited by these findings because this might mean that only one effective treatment is required.

“This is especially important in cystic fibrosis as the lungs have evolved to reject any repeated attempts to transfer genes, even the beneficial ones needed to treat CF.

“So far, this unique method has only been tested in mice. Although we know the same gene transfers can work immediately in other animal lungs, we now need to see if it also works safely into ‘old age’ in animals with more human-like lungs. This would give us confidence to move towards clinical trials.”

The research findings have been published in the Journal of Gene Medicine this week.

“There is still a large amount of work that needs to be done before we can say our latest findings could form the basis for a cure for cystic fibrosis but we are really encouraged by these results,” Dr Parsons said.

“This work has taken 15 years of research to get to this point, with major funding from the National Health & Medical Research Council, as well as CF Associations in Australia and the USA. Without the generous financial and resource support from corporate and personal sponsors via the Cure4CF Foundation, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation, we would never have made it this far.”

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited condition that causes severe, unrelenting lung disease in many children and adults world-wide. Approximately, 1 in 2,500 infants are born with this disease and only half survive past 35 years of age.

The 65 Roses Ball is one of Adelaide’s premiere charity events and the major fundraiser of the year supporting Cystic Fibrosis South Australia.

Hosting the event will be Kate Collins, host of Channel 9's 'A Current Affair'. Entertainment will again be provided by Wintercherry, known for their regular spot at the Lion on Sunday evenings.

There will be fabulous food, beer from Coopers and fine wines courtesy of Scarpantoni Wines flowing throughout the evening.

The 65 Roses Ball is a night of fine foods, wine and entertainment, but it is also an opportunity to bid on a wide variety of items in our Main and Silent Auctions.

Cure4CF Rally BBQ

Cure4CF pulled together their culinary skills and catered a delicious BBQ at Mt Alma Mile and Tarmac Rally in McClaren Vale Adelaide on 29th-30th May.

The generosity shown at this fund raising event was unbelievable. Total money raised was over $10,000. A massive achievement...and on top of the money raised we were effective in raising the profile of Cure4CF for future benefit.

Thanks once again to the volunteers and everyone that helped out.
